A driver was killed Monday after crashing his vehicle into a brick wall in Chula Vista.
As per the initial information, the authorities actively responded to the 600 block of Hilltop Drive at about 3:26 p.m. on reports of a car crash. On arrival, they found a male driver in the Volkswagen Passat and pulled him from the vehicle to start lifesaving efforts, but he ultimately died of his injuries about 30 minutes later. No one else was inside the car at that time.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said the vehicle was initially stopped for a red light at the intersection of East J Street and Hilltop Drive. The light turned green and the driver remained stopped. After a few moments, the driver took off northbound on Hilltop Drive.
The vehicle swerved to the right, traveled across a driveway, hit a tree and then slammed into a brick wall. It is unknown if the driver had a medical condition that played a part in the crash, but officials believe that speed was a factor. No other details are available.
The crash remains under review.
