On Tuesday, a crash injured five University of Georgia students, including 22-year-old Charles Smith III, 21-year-old Jacob Casey, 22-year-old Gracie Page, 21-year-old Lauren Chamberlin, 21-year-old Saxton Usry, and 2 others, involving 36-year-old Lindsey Lowry and 24-year-old Jonathan Jackson on West Broad Street.
The two-vehicle accident took place at about 9:35 a.m. on West Broad Street, close to the Alps Road intersection. The early reports showed that the students were traveling westbound in a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer when the driver failed to yield the right of way while attempting to take a left turn into the Taco Bell.
Just then, a westbound 2013 Nissan Altima T-boned the Trailblazer. On arrival, medics took the students to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. Smith, from Wadley, was the driver of the SUV.
The Nissan driver, Lindsey Lowry, of Winterville and her passenger, Jonathan Jackson, were both taken to St. Mary’s Hospital with unspecified injuries. Charges are pending against the Trailblazer’s driver, officials said. Alcohol was not involved in the accident.
An investigation continues.
