Authorities identified 24-year-old Thomas Benson, of Valencia, as the man who lost his life following a fiery accident on the 5 Freeway in Santa Clarita earlier this month.
At 1:55 a.m. Sunday, April 10, emergency crews responded to the scene after getting reports of a single-car crash on the 5 Freeway, just south of Valencia Boulevard. The vehicle had reportedly caught fire due to the crash. The scene had been located when firefighters responded to reports of described flames in a ditch next to the roadway.
On arrival, responders found a fully-involved car fire with flames spreading into the brush. The vehicle involved was identified by CHP officials as a 2004 maroon Toyota Avalon. The preliminary reports showed that a maroon Toyota Avalon went down a dirt embankment located along the west roadway edge, flipped over several times, and hit a tree before coming to a stop. Benson received major injuries due to the flames. No other details are available.
An investigation is continuing.
