Traffic Accidents in Arizona

Arizona sees a high number of traffic fatalities every year, largely attributed to alcohol-impaired driving. Auto accidents result in 55,000 injuries annually, with 150 injured daily. In addition to this, the high frequency of highway accidents in Arizona has been linked to reckless driving.

The Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety released a preliminary report of the accidents that occurred in the first half of 2022. The numbers show that there has been a significant decrease in the fatalities that occurred in 2022 as compared to the same in 2021. The officials have reported that the number of fatalities in 2022 was 350 which is a sharp decline to the number of fatalities in 2021 – 626.

These numbers were a welcome sight as the fatality rate had been increasing over the years and this sharp decline is a stark contrast. The officials at the Governor’s Office have reported that while these are only the numbers from the first half of the year, they are confident that this trend will remain steady and the yearly numbers will show that.

However, they have also released a number of precautions as the causes of these fatal accidents have largely remained the same from previous years.

Rick Murray, president and CEO of the National Safety Council’s Arizona chapter, has highlighted the fact that speed has been a major factor in most of the fatalities that have occurred. Keeping an eye out for the speed of the vehicle would be a huge step towards preventing more fatalities.

Other causes like driving under the influence, distracted driving, drowsy driving, and even tailgating contribute significantly to these accidents. The statistics have shown that “unsafe speed” is the biggest cause.

The statistics also show that younger drivers are more likely to get involved in these accidents compared to older drivers. In fact, people between the ages of 25 to 34 have been involved in the most accidents. There have also been numbers released that show that men are far more likely than women to be involved in these accidents. The fatality rate for men is twice as high as that for women.

The officials have also reported the most dangerous time as this is the time frame in which most accidents have occurred. The accidents have mostly occurred in the daylight hours. The peak time was between 3.30-4.00 p.m. on Fridays. They have also reported that more accidents took place in urban areas compared to rural ones.

The officials have revealed the areas in Arizona with the most number of accidents as well. Maricopa County takes the lead with a majority of the accidents occurring within its boundaries. Within this, Phoenix and Tucson hold the record for the most number of accidents in the state.
