On Saturday afternoon, Santa Clarita traffic came to a stop for an unknown amount of time after a vehicle went off the 5 Freeway overpass and landed in the middle of oncoming traffic onto Lake Hughes Road.
At about 12 p.m. Saturday, emergency responders got information of a traffic accident on Lake Hughes Road just below the 5 Freeway in Castaic. The preliminary reports showed that a vehicle drove off the freeway. The vehicle, described as a red truck, reportedly struck a pillar before plunging off the side of the 5 Freeway onto Lake Hughes Road.
The vehicle fell approximately 20 feet off of the freeway and landed on all four wheels without rolling over, almost hitting multiple cars. The reports also revealed that about twenty feet of the northbound 5 Freeway guardrail was damaged as a result of the collision.
A tree also reportedly fell into the roadway of Lake Hughes Road during the initial crash. Traffic along Lake Hughes Road was closed down as crew worked to clear the scene. The driver walked away from the scene and hospitalization was not required.
The incident remains under review.
