A Michigan school bus driver believed to be driving under the influence was detained after she slammed the bus into a street sign with 30 to 40 students on board.
As per the initial information, the single-vehicle accident took place at about 4 p.m. Tuesday on Hall Road near Schoenherr Road in Sterling Heights. The preliminary reports showed that a woman was driving a Utica Community Schools bus transporting Henry Ford II High School students when the bus veered off the road and struck a street sign.
All the students remained unharmed in the crash. The driver was taken into custody after officers detected a strong smell of intoxicants on her breath. The preliminary breath test indicated the woman’s blood-alcohol limit was 0.10, exceeding the Michigan’s legal limit of 0.08 for driving.
The female driver was immediately detained and taken to the Sterling Heights Police Department for processing. The bus driver’s name has not been revealed and she has not been arraigned. Utica Community Schools sent another bus to the scene to take home the students who had been on the damaged bus. No other details are available.
The investigation continues.
