On early Saturday morning, a 69-year-old woman lost her life and 62-year-old Daryl Howard received injuries in a crash on Highway 299.
The incident happened just before 5:00 a.m. At the beginning, the authorities believed that the two vehicles they discovered collided with each other. However, they later found out that there were two separate crashes. The first incident involved a 2008 Subaru with two occupants from Willow Creek.
The Subaru was heading west on Highway 299 when it went off the wet road and slammed into a large oak tree. The CHP confirmed that the passenger was not wearing a seat belt at the time of crash. The 69-year-old female passenger died from her injuries.
62-year-old Willow Creek driver Daryl Howard also sustained significant injuries. On arrival, first responders rushed him to Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Eureka for treatment of a broken wrist. As of now, the authorities haven’t confirmed if alcohol and/or drugs contributed to the crash.
The second crash involved a 2001 Toyota Camry that was found with no one inside the vehicle near the Subaru. Authorities said that the Camry was also going west and also drifted off the road, to the east of the 2008 Subaru and then the Camry hit several oak trees.
According to authorities, the Camry crashed just after the Subaru struck the large oak tree. They also said that the male driver “exited from the Toyota Camry, made contact with the driver of the Subaru, and then left the scene.”
The authorities will continue to determine the cause of the crash.
