On early Saturday morning, a 51-year-old motorcyclist lost his life after he clipped the back of a big rig on the northbound 57 Freeway.
Reports indicated that the man was riding a Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycle and was behind the trailer in the No. 4 lane of the 57 near the Diamond Bar Boulevard exit at about 2 a.m. When the driver attempted to merge into the rightmost lane to pass the trailer, he hit the back end of the big rig and lost control of the motorcycle. The impact sent the bike careening into a concrete K rail.
Officers believe that the rider was then struck several times by passing vehicles after he flew off the motorcycle, receiving serious head injuries. He reportedly succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not been revealed at this time; however police mentioned that he lived in Bullhead City, Arizona.
The big rig driver pulled over after the accident and did not receive any injuries. Authorities did not believe that alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash. The northbound side of the 57 just north of the L.A. County line was shut down for several hours on Saturday. All lanes were reopened before 8 a.m., officials said.
An investigation is ongoing.
