A 5-year-old child died of her injuries after she was ejected from a car being driven by a drunken man Saturday afternoon in Houston.
Officers actively responded to the area of Highway 59 at Chimney Rock at about 3:55 p.m. Eyewitnesses driving on the highway informed the officers that they saw a Honda weaving in and out of the southbound lanes just before the accident. Shortly after, the driver of the Honda crashed into an 18-wheeler and continued driving. The vehicle then struck a red Mercedes and a box truck.
As the driver struck the box truck, the 5-year-old girl was ejected from the car. It is unknown where she was sitting inside the car, or if she was properly restrained at that time. On arrival, emergency crews rushed the girl to the hospital in critical condition where she later succumbed to her injuries.
A 4-year-old and a 2-year-old child were also transported to the hospital with non-critical injuries. Officials have not confirmed the relation between the driver and the three small children. That driver was arrested and charged with murder.
An investigation continues.
