Authorities identified 89-year-old Gregorio Gomez as the victim who died after a wrong-way crash Monday in Heber that also caused injuries to 40-year-old Ashley Castillo and 84-year-old Elena Gomez.
The fatal three-vehicle wreck took place on Highway 111, south of Heber Road. The investigation reports showed that Gomez’s vehicle swerved off the highway, south of Heber Road, and went into the oncoming traffic, resulting in the head-on collision with Castillo’s vehicle.
Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene by the officials. Gomez’s passenger, Elena Gomez received moderate injuries. REACH Air airlifted her to Desert Regional Medical Center. Castillo had to be removed from her vehicle by the emergency responders. She was flown to Desert Regional Medical Center via Mercy Air with major injuries.
It was also reported that another vehicle struck Castillo’s vehicle. Carlos Jimenez, the driver, remained unharmed in the accident. The driver going the wrong-way led to the crash, according to the officials. It is unknown if speed was involved in the accident. No other details are available.
An investigation is ongoing.
