On Wednesday afternoon, a two-vehicle collision took the life of 8-year-old Ian Echols and injured 31-year-old Gretchen Echols, 9-year-old Xavier Ankrom and 68-year-old Clyde Martin in Rabun County.
The fatal incident took place shortly after 3:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 76 West, close to Charlie Mountain Road. The preliminary reports showed that Gretchen Echols, of Clayton, was driving a Ford Taurus on Highway 76 when she failed to maintain control of her car and veered into the oncoming lane of traffic.
Just then, the car crashed into a Ford F150. The front of the truck struck the back door of the passenger side of the car. Ian Echols, who was in the back right passenger seat of the car, died as a result of the crash. On the other hand, the passenger in the back left seat, Xavier Ankrom, of Clayton, was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for treatment.
Gretchen Echols sustained life-threatening injuries and, according to the recent update, she was in ICU at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. The driver of the truck identified as Clyde Martin, of Clayton, was also taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with minor injuries.
An investigation is ongoing.
