Authorities identified 77-year-old Joseph Sias, from New Orleans, and 63-year-old Wayne Thomas, of Los Angeles, as the victims who lost their lives following a wrong-way collision Sunday on a highway in Terrebonne Parish.
The fatal head-on crash took place just before 3 a.m. when Katelynn Scott, of Houma, was traveling west on the eastbound off-ramp of U.S. Hwy 90 north of Houma. At that point of time, Joseph Sias was also driving east on U.S. Hwy 90 in the right lane in a 2004 Toyota Highlander. As Scott entered the eastbound lanes driving the wrong way, her vehicle crashed head-on into a Toyota.
Sias died as a result of the collision. Wayne Thomas was a passenger in the Highland and received injuries in the crash. Thomas was rushed to the hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries. The investigation reports showed that Scott showed signs of impairment and failed a field sobriety test, and was detained.
Scott was booked into the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex for Vehicular Homicide, 1st Degree Vehicular Negligent Injury, DWI 1st Offense, and Driving on Divided Highways. No other information is available.
An investigation is continuing.
