70-year-old Mary Grooms died and others injured after a wreck on Hwy 31 in Smith County (Tyler, TX)

Authorities identified 70-year-old Mary Grooms, of Murchison, as the woman who lost her life following a wreck just outside Tyler on Tuesday that also hospitalized 28-year-old Mikaela Brooks and 71-year-old Irene Cramer.

As per the initial information, the authorities actively responded to the area at SH31 about 2.5 miles west of Tyler in Smith County on reports of a five-vehicle pile-up at around 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday. The preliminary reports showed that a 2007 Infiniti G35 was heading westbound on Hwy 31 in the inside lane approaching a red light.

The driver of the Infiniti was identified as Mary Grooms, 70, of Murchison. A 2019 Nissan Rogue was in front of the Infiniti; a 2021 GMC Acadia was in front of the Nissan, and a 2020 BMW X5 was ahead of the GMC. The reports also revealed that all three vehicles were stopped at the red light.

A 2016 Hyundai Elantra was going in the outside lane toward the red light. For an undetermined reason, the driver of the Infiniti failed to control the vehicle’s speed and rear-ended the Nissan, causing the Nissan to hit the GMC before sliding into the center median where it came to a halt. The GMC then collided with the BMW. Both came to a rest in the roadway. After hitting the Nissan, the Infiniti spun into the outside lane where it collided with the Hyundai.

Grooms was rushed to UT Health Northeast Main Hospital in Tyler. She was declared dead by hospital personnel. Grooms was later shifted to Harmon Undertaking Funeral Home in Tyler. The driver of the Nissan, Mikaela Brooks, 28, of Ben Wheeler, was taken to UT Health Northeast Main Hospital with non-incapacitating injuries.

The driver of the GMC, Sara Turner, 38, of Chandler received medical aid and was released at the scene. The driver of the BMW, Zena Hubby, 51, of Double Oak also received medical assistance and was released at the scene. The driver of the Hyundai, Irene Cramer, 71, of Brownsboro was taken through ambulance to UT Health Northeast Hospital with non-incapacitating injuries. No other information is available.

The wreck remains under review.
