Authorities identified 7-year-old Gabriel Garate as the boy who lost his life after being struck by a pickup truck Tuesday in Long Beach while 57-year-old James Barnes was arrested in connection with the accident.
The fatal auto-pedestrian collision took place at around 5:25 p.m. on Lakewood Boulevard and 23rd Street. The preliminary investigation showed that a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck was traveling westbound on 23rd Street and making a left turn to southbound Lakewood Boulevard.
The reports further revealed that a father and juvenile were crossing Lakewood Boulevard eastbound on 23rd Street when the Dodge pickup truck failed to yield to them in the marked south crosswalk. The father and juvenile were in the crosswalk with the right-of-way pedestrian signal when the incident happened.
Gabriel Garate, from Long Beach, died of his injuries at the scene. James Barnes, of Desert Hot Spring, stayed at the scene and was booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. Barnes was released early Wednesday morning on $50,000 bond. Alcohol, drugs, and distracted driving were not believed to be involved in this crash. No further details are available.
