The New Mexico State Police Department reported a motor vehicle crash in Otero County on Monday evening. The accident happened on US 54 at milepost 76 at around 3 p.m.
According to police, a motorcycle and pickup truck were both moving south on U.S. 54 when the pickup veered out of its lane and struck the motorcycle.
The motorcyclist’s passenger, Susan DeForest, 68, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was declared dead at the scene.
Both riders of the motorcycle were wearing helmets, and according to the New Mexico State Police, alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the collision. The fatal crash remains under investigation by New Mexico State Police.
