68-year-old Rex Brian Powell dead after a dirt bike accident in Mendocino National Forest (Lake County, CA)

Authorities identified 68-year-old Rex Brian Powell, of San Rafael, as the man who succumbed to his injuries at a Mendocino National Forest campground Sunday following a crash in Lake County.

The fatal dirt bike accident took place near the Middle Creek Campground in Lake County. The incident occurred while Powell was dirt biking with his son in an area designated for off-highway vehicles close to the Middle Creek Campground.

There was reportedly some debris in the trail and the son came to a halt. Powell, who was riding behind him, applied the brakes and was thrown from his bike. He fell into bushes and was impaled by a broken branch.

His son attempted to render him medical aid on the trail and took him back to the campground, where first responders met them at about 10:25 a.m. Despite the life-saving efforts, Powell succumbed to his injuries. No other details are available.

The accident remains under investigation.
