February 19, 2024 – Nationwide Report®

A tragic fatal crash occurred earlier today in Castro County, resulting in the death of one man, as confirmed by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The multi-vehicle accident involved a 2021 GMC Sierra travelling northbound and a 2016 Ford F450 pickup travelling southbound on US 385, approximately 9 miles north of Dimmitt.

Both trucks were towing trailers. For reasons yet to be determined, the Ford pickup crossed into the northbound lane, side-swiping the GMC pickup around 1:45 p.m. The GMC and its trailer jackknifed in the northbound lane, while the Ford came to rest in the ditch west of the road.

The driver of the GMC, 45-year-old Tranquilino Garza of Hereford, sustained no injuries. Unfortunately, the driver of the Ford, 61-year-old Russell Smallwood of Lubbock, was pronounced dead at the scene. Texas Highway Patrol Troopers investigated the crash, which remains under investigation.
