60-year-old Johnny M Powell died after being hit by an 18-wheeler in Gregg County (Gregg County, TX)

Authorities identified 60-year-old Johnny M Powell who lost his life following a crash early Monday in Gregg County.

As per the initial information, the fatal pedestrian crash took place on I-20, approximately three miles southwest of Longview. The preliminary reports showed that Powell was driving eastbound on I-20 when his vehicle veered off the road to the south, possibly due to unsafe speed for the wet conditions.

Powell then came out of his vehicle and walked north to I-20. Just then, an 18-wheeler that was heading east on I-20 hit Powell, who had walked onto the road. Johnny M Powell, of Jackson, Miss., succumbed to his injuries at the scene at 3:34 a.m. No other details are available.

An investigation is ongoing.
