On Tuesday morning, 58-year-old Angela V Morales was killed and 62-year-old Fernando A Morales received injuries in a two-vehicle crash on state Highway 503 south of 76th Street in Orchards, as per the Washington State Patrol.
The incident, which was reported at 9:35 a.m., involved a semi-truck and pickup. The passenger of the pickup, Angela V Morales, 58, of Vancouver, was declared deceased at the scene, State Patrol said. The driver, Fernando A Morales, 62, of Vancouver, was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the semi-truck, Viorel I Melnik, 48, of Vancouver, did not sustain any injuries as a result of the crash, as per a crash report. According to investigators, Fernando Morales did to yield to oncoming traffic when he tried to make a left turn westbound onto 76th Street. Melnik crashed into Morales’ pickup while going through the intersection.
Troopers are still trying to determine whether Morales was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of crash, but confirmed that Melnik was not under the influence. Charges are pending against Morales, according to the State Patrol. The southbound lanes of Highway 503 were shut down by the crash for several hours.
An investigation is ongoing at this time.
