Authorities identified 55-year-old Danna Forbis, from Reno, as the woman who lost her life following a single-vehicle accident that also caused injuries to 42-year-old Leonard Forbis and 34-year-old Deborah Castillo on Tuesday in Quincy.
As per the initial information, the fatal car crash took place at 12:01 p.m. on Highway 70, east of Sierra Springs Drive. The investigation reports showed that Leonard Forbis, from Reno, Nevada, was driving a 2001 Subaru Legacy at an unknown speed, traveling eastbound on Highway 70.
Deborah Castillo, of Quincy, was in the Subaru’s right front passenger while Danna Forbis was seated in the left rear seat and not wearing a seatbelt. The reports also revealed that Leonard Forbis allowed the Subaru to cross the solid double yellow lines separating the east and westbound lanes.
When Forbis recognized his mistake, he aggressively steered to the right and the Subaru entered the dirt shoulder on the south side of SR-70. Forbis then overcorrected to the left, which induced a counter-clockwise spin across both lanes of the highway.
The north edge of the highway falls off into a deep valley and the Subaru reportedly went airborne. Due to the weight of the motor, the Subaru tilted front down and the roof crashed into a large pine tree. The Subaru came to a stop on its side.
Castillo came out of the Subaru under her own power and was taken to Renown via ground ambulance. Leonard Forbis needed the assistance of medical and fire personnel on scene to cut him from the wreckage and he was airlifted to Renown via CareFlight Helicopter. Danna Forbis died of her injuries at the scene.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene. Both directions of the highway were down to one-way traffic control for about two hours during the investigation. Leonard Forbis was detained on scene, and an investigation for driving while under the influence of drugs and manslaughter was initiated. No other details are available.
An investigation is ongoing.
