52-year-old Rhett Wilbur died after a hit-and-run crash in Tucson; 35-year-old Bradley Schaffer detained (Tucson, AZ)

Authorities identified 52-year-old Rhett Wilbur as the man who lost his life after getting struck by a vehicle early Friday in the Tucson area.

As per the initial information, the fatal hit-and-run crash took place at about 6:30 a.m. near East Sunrise Drive and North Craycroft Road. Authorities actively responded to the scene and, on arrival, found 52-year-old Rhett Wilbur in extremely critical condition. Despite the life-saving efforts, Wilbur died of his injuries at the scene.

The vehicle involved left the scene before the responders arrived. As deputies began searching the area, someone reported that a suspicious vehicle had been abandoned in the area. The vehicle seemed to have damage that was consistent with the collision. The suspect was identified as 35-year-old Bradley Schaffer.

Schaffer is facing charges of manslaughter, leaving the scene of a collision and driving under the influence. He was detained and booked into the Pima County jail. No further details are available.

An investigation is ongoing.
