Authorities identified 50-year-old Shirley Cavazos Juarez as the woman who lost her life after being run down by a reckless driver Monday night in Lompoc.
As per the initial information, the fatal pedestrian accident took place in the J/K alley, just north of Laurel Avenue at about 10 p.m. The preliminary reports showed that 27-year-old Miriam Aidee Vela Estrada, from Lompoc, was speeding and driving recklessly in the alleyway when she lost control of the vehicle.
According to the officials, Shirley Cavazos Juarez was stepping out of her vehicle and about to walk into her home when she was struck by Estrada. The reports further revealed that the suspect also struck gas and water lines and a fence in the area. The outside of the apartment building also seemed to be damaged.
Juarez was rushed to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Estrada was unharmed, according to police, who say she initially left the area, but was found and detained on suspicion of felony DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony hit-and-run. No other details are made available.
An investigation is ongoing.
