Five people, including two children were hospitalized after a wreck Sunday in Encinitas.
As per the initial information, the three-vehicle accident took place on Interstate 5 in Encinitas. The early reports showed that officers saw a 19-year-driver in a Nissan Sentra going erratically and at high speeds on northbound I-5 near Manchester Avenue. When officers tried to pull over the driver, he did not stop and took off, leading to a chase.
The pursuit began just before 8:30 a.m. on Interstate 5 in Encinitas and ended in a crash at the intersection of Encinitas Boulevard and Via Cantebria. The driver exited at Encinitas Boulevard and traveled east for about a mile. At the intersection with Via Centebria, the driver went through a red light, turned left and slammed into two vehicles going west on Encinitas Boulevard.
The two vehicles hit included a gray Volkswagen Jetta and a gray Chevrolet Traverse. The Nissan driver had the most severe injuries among the five people who were rushed to the hospital. Two passengers in the Nissan also received major injuries.
According to the authorities, nine people received injuries in the collision, including a 25-year-old Carlsbad woman driving the Volkswagen and a 32-year-old Encinitas woman driving the Chevrolet, along with her 1- and 3-year-old sons, who were passengers in the SUV.
The two children in the Chevrolet were hospitalized with minimal injuries. Authorities are trying to find out if alcohol and/or drugs were involved in the collision. No further details are available.
The wreck remains under review.
