49-year-old Verna L Harris died and 53-year-old Brendan R Durkin injured after a crash in Upshur County (Gilmer, TX)

Authorities identified 49-year-old Verna L Harris, of Gilmer, as the woman who lost her life following a traffic collision Tuesday afternoon in Upshur County.

As per the initial information, the authorities actively responded to the area at US 271 around two miles south of Gilmer after getting reports of a two-vehicle accident just after 5:30 p.m. The preliminary reports showed that Verna L Harris was driving north in a van on US 271 behind a truck that was driven by 53-year-old Brendan R Durkin, of Gilmer.

The reports further revealed that Durkin slowed and was preparing to turn left into a private drive on the west side of US 271. At that point of time, Harris failed to control her vehicle’s speed and crashed into Durkin’s pickup truck.

Durkin was transported to a hospital in Tyler and is listed in stable condition. Harris, who was not bucked up, according to DPS, was declared dead at a hospital in Tyler. No other details are available.
