44-year-old Fernando Garza received life-threatening injuries after being hit by a semi-truck on I-10 (El Paso, TX)

Authorities identified 44-year-old Fernando Garza, of Odessa, Texas, as the man who sustained life-threatening injuries after getting hit by a semi-truck in northwest El Paso on Wednesday night.

As per the initial information, Special Traffic Investigation unit with the El Paso Police Department responded to the area on Interstate 10 east, near the Transmountain exit on reports of an auto-pedestrian collision that happened at 11:03 p.m.

The preliminary investigation showed that the driver of the semi-truck was traveling eastbound and saw a person walking on the roadway. The reports further stated that the driver veered into the next lane to avoid hitting Garza.  However, the trailer portion of the semi-truck hit Garza.

The reports also indicated that the driver pulled off of the roadway and informed the police about the accident. On arrival, first responders rushed Garza to University Medical Center by Fire Medical Services with life-threatening injuries. All lanes were shut down on I-10 east due to the crash, but reopened on Thursday.
