41-year-old Xavier Zarate detained after a fatal crash in south Austin involving a child (Austin, TX)

On Sunday, officials arrested 41-year-old Xavier Zarate after a fatal accident in south Austin that involved a child.

Crews actively responded to the area of the 11300 block of Menchaca Road at about 5:40 p.m. after getting reports of a traffic accident. The incident occurred near the entrance to the Olympic Heights neighborhood, along Marcus Abrams Boulevard. A resident who traveled from the scene said that his wife saw a bicycle on the road.

The identity of the child involved in the crash has not been revealed at this time. According to the authorities, Xavier Zarate was charged with injury to a child. As of late Monday night, Zarate remained locked up with no bond set. No other details are made available.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
