41-year-old man dead after a semi-truck crash in Gaviota (Gaviota, CA)

A 41-year-old man lost his life after a single-vehicle wreck late Thursday morning in Gaviota.

As per the initial information, the fatal semi-truck crash took place at about 4:50 a.m. on the northbound Highway 101 at Winchester Canyon Road. The preliminary reports showed that semi-truck was heading northbound when for unknown reasons, it swerved off the roadway and collided with a large tree.

The driver, a 41-year-old Compton resident, was thrown from the vehicle as he was not buckled up at the time of the collision. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The highway was shut down shortly after, at 5:15 a.m.

Tow trucks responded to remove the trailer and CalTrans tree trimmers were requested to remove parts of the tree in the center divider. One southbound lane was blocked off and on due to the need for traffic to be diverted.

According to the authorities, the closure was lifted at 10:35 a.m., and CalTrans confirmed it at 11:20 a.m. Traffic in the area remained slow for hours. No further details are available.

The wreck remains under investigation.
