4 people, including a 3-month-old baby injured after a single-car crash in Holland (Holland, MI)

On Tuesday, four people, including two children suffered injuries following a rollover crash in Holland.

As per the initial information, officers actively responded to the area of US-31 shortly before 4:00 p.m. after getting reports of a single-vehicle accident. The early reports revealed that a 2006 Pontiac Torrent was carrying a family of four from Holland, including a 3-month old baby, a 4-year-old child, and a family dog. The car, driven by a 28-year-old woman, was heading northbound US-31 in the left passing lane just south of the Pere Marquette Highway off-ramp.

As the vehicle was going on the freeway, the driver’s 29-year-old husband, who was the front seat passenger, reached over and grabbed the steering wheel from the woman. The woman failed to maintain control of the vehicle as a result of which the car went over 2-lanes of traffic, and drifted off the roadway. After that, the woman tried to regain control of the vehicle but she failed as the vehicle swerved back across the same 2-lanes of traffic, went into the muddy median, and flipped two times.

The car hardly missed other drivers going northbound on US-31. Due to the impact, the woman’s husband was ejected through the moonroof, before the vehicle ended up on top of him. The 3-month-old, along with the rear-facing car seat she was riding in, was also thrown from the vehicle in the process. On arrival, emergency responders took the female driver and her two children to the Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital with non-fatal injuries.

The man was rushed to Mercy Health in Muskegon and was listed in serious condition. The family dog remained uninjured and was taken to the Mason County Animal Control facilities. Officials believe that alcohol might have contributed to the crash. The improper installation of the car seat is also being investigated. The left passing lane of the southbound US-31 Freeway was shut down for about one hour as crews worked at the scene. Multiple agencies provided assistance at the scene. No other details are made available.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
