Authorities identified 39-year-old Otis Dewayne Nelson as the man who lost his life following a traffic collision Wednesday on the city’s South Side.
The fatal single-vehicle accident took place a little before 6:40 a.m. on South Zarzamora Street near Hunters Pond, which is south of Loop 410. According to the investigation reports, Otis Dewayne Nelson had just left work and was on his way when his vehicle swerved off the road and crashed into a tree.
A co-worker driving by noticed the crash and informed the officers. On arrival, emergency responders extricated the man from the vehicle. The victim suffered major injuries and was declared dead at the scene by the officials.
A spokesperson from Toyota stated that Nelson worked for a supply company to the Toyota plant, but was not a Toyota employee. Authorities said that the man might have fallen asleep at the wheel. No other information has been provided.
The incident remains under review.
