On Thursday, a 37-year-old man lost his life following a single-vehicle accident in Bellingham.
As per the initial information, the fatal motorcycle crash was reported at approximately 8:20pm on Lakeway Drive under the I-5 overpass. The early reports showed that the 2003 Honda VTX1800R motorcycle was northbound on Interstate 5 when the rider failed to negotiate a curve and the motorcycle went into the median.
After that, the motorcycle hit a guardrail, went over a cement barrier and dropped down to Lakeway Drive. The rider, later identified as a 37-year-old Blaine man, was pronounced dead at the scene by the officials. Reports further revealed that a 2018 GMC Canyon on Lakeway Drive was damaged by the falling guardrail.
According to the authorities, alcohol and drugs were not involved; however, speed and aggressive driving were said to be the cause of the collision. The left lane of northbound Interstate 5 was blocked for over an hour and Lakeway Drive at the overpass was completely shut down as crews worked at the scene. Drivers were asked to expect a long closure. Officers established a detour around the closure through King Street and Humboldt Street. No further details were provided.
The crash remains under investigation.
