Authorities identified 37-year-old Alexis Covarrubias as the man who lost his life following a traffic collision that injured two other people Thursday in South Los Angeles.
As per the initial information, the fatal multi-vehicle wreck took place just before 3:15 p.m. at the westbound Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway exit at Central Avenue. The officers were chasing a copper Kia SUV sedan after units reported the vehicle driving recklessly.
The Kia slammed into a red vehicle at the westbound Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway exit at Central Avenue after hitting a truck. Alexis Covarrubias was pronounced dead at the scene. Covarrubias was driving the red vehicle.
The driver and a passenger in the Kia were 14 and 15 years old. They received injuries in the crash and were handcuffed to gurneys before they were transported to a hospital. It was reported that four to seven vehicles were involved in the pile-up, but authorities did not confirm the number.
Several vehicles were damaged due to the crash. According to the eyewitnesses, the suspects were weaving in and out of traffic during the chase. The SUV was reported stolen from Compton last week. Los Angeles County Firefighters responded to extricate the suspects from the mangled SUV using hydraulic tools.
The westbound Glenn Anderson Freeway off-ramp at Central Avenue was shut down during the investigation and cleanup. No additional details are available.
An investigation is ongoing.
