On Saturday, a head-on crash took the lives of 30-year-old Krystian M Gachassin and 34-year-old Preston Barnes, both from Iberia Parish, on Jefferson Island Road.
The fatal car crash took place just after 3:00 p.m. in Iberia Parish. The early reports showed that Barnes was driving a 2006 Kia Spectra south on Jefferson Island Road while Gachassin was driving a 2001 Acura CL north on that road.
Barnes reportedly went over the center line and crashed into the Acura head-on in the northbound lane of travel. Barnes and his two passengers were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident. On arrival, medics took all three to local hospitals with major injuries. Barnes died of his injuries shortly after.
Gachassin and her passenger were wearing seatbelts at that time. They were also taken to local hospitals with major injuries, but Gachassin later died of her injuries. Impairment is unclear at this time, but standard toxicology samples were obtained from the drivers and results are pending. Speeding on the part of Barnes is suspected to have caused the collision.
An investigation continues.
