On Saturday night, 29-year-old Leslie M Eckman of La Center died and 41-year-old Chris Sombounvong of La Center suffered injuries after they crashed their motorcycles on I-5 northbound.
According to authorities, both the riders were driving their motorcycles north on I-5 at around 11 p.m. when they approached a slower-moving car in the left lane, and they lost control of their vehicles.
Sombounvong crashed into the back of a car as a result of which both motorcyclists were ejected. Sombounvong came to rest near the right shoulder, and Eckman came to rest in the left lane, where another car hit her. On arrival, authorities declared Eckman deceased. Both drivers were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
Paramedics took Sombounvong to the hospital with unknown injuries. Charges are pending against charges. Officers shut down all three lanes of I-5 northbound for hours stretching into early Sunday morning.
An investigation is ongoing.
