28-year-old Eva Lopez Gonzalez and 49-year-old Antral Thomas died after a crash on 60 Freeway (Riverside County, CA)

Authorities identified 28-year-old Eva Lopez Gonzalez, from Hemet, and 49-year-old Antral Thomas, from Pasadena, as the victims who lost their lives following a wrong-way collision early Saturday morning near Moreno Valley that also caused injuries to one other person.

The fatal head-on crash was reported at around 3:30 a.m. on the westbound 60 Freeway, just east of Gilman Springs Road in Riverside County. A 28-year-old female driver, later identified as Eva Lopez Gonzalez was heading eastbound in the freeway’s westbound lanes at around 90 mph in a Hyundai Sonata when her vehicle crashed into a Chevy Malibu. The front ends of both cars were crushed due to the collision.

The Chevy’s driver and passenger, both males, were going from Palm Springs to Pico Rivera at the time of the accident. The driver was later identified as 49-year-old Antral Thomas. Both drivers were declared dead at the scene by the officials. The Chevy’s passenger, a 40-year-old resident of Pico Rivera, was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries.

Approximately a dozen Cal Fire firefighters assessed the wreckage of the victims’ car, which came to a rest on top of the center median after the collision. The 60 Freeway had been closed for construction work and was opened again just before the crash. All westbound lanes were again closed down when emergency responders arrived at the scene. The freeway was fully reopened just after 7:30 a.m. No other details are available.

An investigation is ongoing.
