A 25-year-old woman lost her life after a crash Friday in Coronado while authorities arrested Erwin Ramos-Mejia on suspicion of DUI.
As per the initial information, the fatal single-vehicle accident took place at around 12:30 a.m. near the 1100 block of Orange Avenue. The officers responded to the scene and, on arrival, found a 20-year-old male driver and 20-year-old female passenger outside of a white sedan and the rear female passenger who died in the collision.
The preliminary reports showed that the vehicle was heading southbound when it crashed into a light pole and possibly a tree, causing it to roll before coming to a rest. The driver and the other passenger were transported to a local hospital with non-critical injuries.
The driver, now identified as Erwin Ramos-Mejia, was later detained and charged on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence involving bodily injury. Alcohol and speed seemed to have contributed to crash. The 1000 and 1100 blocks of Orange Avenue were blocked for several hours to give way to the investigation. No further details are available.
The incident remains under review.
