On Sunday morning, a 24-year-old Chico man lost his life following a two-vehicle accident on Highway 99.
As per the initial information, the fatal car crash took place shortly before 2:00 a.m. on Highway 99 and Nicolaus Avenue. The preliminary investigation showed that a 60-year-old San Jacinta man was driving a 2017 Dodge 3500 south in a northbound lane of the highway at 55 mph.
At some point of time, the Jacinta man crashed head-on into a 24-year-old Chico man traveling north in a 2010 Honda Accord. The driver of the Honda Accord succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The San Jacinta man sustained major injuries and was rushed to a hospital. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved in the collision.
Officials closed both directions of Highway 99 for approximately four hours as crews worked at the scene. According to the authorities, it was very foggy at the time of the crash and estimated a 75 feet visibility for both drivers. Both of the drivers failed to avoid the collision due to the conditions. No other details are available.
The incident remains under investigation.
