On Sunday, 22-year-old Terry Nilsen Jr, of Chico, lost his life following a DUI crash on Esplanade while officers arrested 24-year-old Chase Jacobsen, from Chico, for driving under the influence.
The fatal hit-and-run accident took place at around 12:39 a.m. in the 3500 block of Esplanade, north of Shasta Elementary school. The preliminary investigation indicated that the moped rider, Nilsen Jr, was hit by a pick-up truck driven by Jacobsen. Jacobsen drove off without stopping while Nilsen Jr was still wedged under the truck.
The moped rider suffered major injuries in the accident. Jacobsen was arrested for driving under the influence and hit-and-run causing major injury. Nilsen Jr later succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital. Officers held Jacobsen in custody for vehicular manslaughter with no bail.
Reports further added that the moped left a fluid trail and debris field along with scuff marks in the roadway. That helped the officials to find the moped’s location which is two miles away in the Amber Grove subdivision. No other details are immediately available.
The incident remains under active review.
