On Wednesday, a 22-year-old man and a 42-year-old man lost their lives following a single-vehicle accident on I-35.
The fatal car crash took place at around 7:45 a.m. on the entrance ramp to Interstate 35 North at N. Walters St. According to the investigation reports, the driver was attempting to escape an officer who was trying to stop the vehicle. Officials reported that the SUV was going erratically.
An officer in a marked patrol car started a traffic stop on the SUV as it traveled in the right lane of the frontage road. The driver did not stop and suddenly crossed two lanes of traffic to enter Interstate 35. The vehicle then slammed into a guard rail and rolled over onto the interstate. Due to the impact, several people were ejected from the SUV.
On Thursday, authorities mentioned that there were nine people inside the car. Two people were declared dead at the scene by the officials. Four people were taken to the hospital by EMS; two were in critical condition while two had non-fatal injuries. Three other occupants ran away from the crash site.
One of those people was located nearby and was transported to the hospital by EMS with non-life-threatening injuries. The northbound lanes of Interstate 35 were shut down for several hours on Wednesday morning as crews worked at the scene. At this time, it is unknown who was behind the wheel. No other details are available.
An investigation is continuing.
