22-year-old Cole Thayer killed after a head-on collision near Austin (Austin, NV)

Authorities identified 22-year-old Cole Thayer as the man who lost his life following a head-on crash on July 22 near Austin.

The fatal two-vehicle collision was reported at about 4:25 p.m. on US-50 near mile marker 27 in Lander County approximately 3 miles east of Austin. According to the investigation reports, a Freightliner tractor trailer was traveling too fast to negotiate the curved roadway and went over into the opposite travel lane.

The tractor trailer crashed into the front of a white Ford pickup, sending it off the roadway. The driver of the Ford truck, identified as 22-year-old Cole Thayer, of Austin, succumbed to his injuries after the wreck. The driver of the Freightliner was taken from the scene for medical treatment with suspected minimal injuries. No further details were provided.

The crash remains under review.
