A single-vehicle accident on US Hwy 171 claimed the life of 21-year-old Chaniya Piper, of DeRidder, and injured 21-year-old LaMya R Scott on Sunday.
As per the initial information, authorities actively responded to the area of US Hwy 171, just south of Lumas Road in Beauregard Parish just before 3:45 a.m. on reports of a solo-vehicle accident. The preliminary investigation showed that 21-year-old LaMya R Scott of DeRidder, was driving north on US 171 in a 2011 Dodge pickup truck.
The Dodge, for unknown reasons, veered off the left side of the roadway and entered the center median. Then, the Dodge went back onto the roadway, swerved off the roadway again, entered the center median, and rolled over. Piper, who was wearing a seatbelt at that time, received major injuries as a result of the accident and was declared deceased at the scene by the officials.
Scott, who was properly restrained, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a Lake Charles area hospital for treatment. The other two occupants in the vehicle were also properly restrained and incurred minor injuries. A toxicology sample was collected from Scott and sent for analysis.
The crash remains under investigation.
