A 2-year-old girl lost her life and a 3-month-old baby boy was left in critical condition following a traffic collision Wednesday in Allen Park.
As per the initial information, the fatal two-vehicle crash took place at 9 p.m. on northbound M-39 near Outer Drive. The preliminary investigation showed that the child’s mother might have been impaired when she struck another car near Outer Drive before slamming into the median.
The 30-year-old woman was also speeding when the incident happened, killing the 2-year-old — who was not buckled up — after they were ejected. The baby boy, who was not lap-belted, received serious injuries after they were thrown from the seat. The driver of the other car remained unharmed in the accident.
The northbound lanes from I-94 to Outer Drive were shut down for a couple of hours during the investigation. The ramps from I-94 to the Southfield Freeway were also closed. All lanes and ramps have since reopened. Authorities originally reported the deceased girl was aged 7, but updated the age to reflect that she was 2-years-old. No other information is available.
An investigation is ongoing.
