The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified 1-year-old Aislyn Kamila Tejeda as the infant who died after a suspected DUI crash that caused injuries to several people on Saturday south of Shafter. Authorities arrested 22-year-old Irving Rodriguez-Barraza in connection with the accident.
The fatal two-vehicle collision was reported at about 4:30 p.m. on Shafter Avenue at Burbank Street. The preliminary investigation showed that Irving Rodriguez-Barraza was driving a 2004 Dodge Ram eastbound on Burbank Street, approaching Shafter Avenue.
A passenger, identified as 48-year-old Cruz Carrillo Olvera, was also in the vehicle. At that point of time, a 29-year-old Bakersfield man was driving a 2017 Jeep heading northbound on Shafter Avenue, approaching Burbank Street. The reports further revealed that Rodriguez-Barraza ran a stop sign and slammed into the left side of the Jeep.
Due to the impact, the Jeep was pushed into an almond orchard northeast of the intersection, hitting two poles and almond tree before turning over on its left side. The Dodge collided with a stop sign northeast of the intersection. All the victims were transported to Kern Medical, including Aislyn Kamila Tejeda. She died at 6 p.m.
Six people were also injured, ranging from moderate to major injuries. Rodriguez-Barraza was taken into custody for causing the crash and is under suspicion for driving under the influence of alcohol. No other details are available.
An investigation is ongoing.
