One person was injured after a DUI crash Tuesday in Merced.
As per the initial information, the authorities actively responded to the area of Santa Fe and Olive just after 6:00 p.m. on reports of a head-on collision. Nearby units arrived and witnesses reportedly informed them a Mustang had slammed into a minivan.
The Mustang was driven by a man in his 40s heading southbound on Santa Fe and the minivan driver was a man in his 50s going the opposite direction. According to the authorities, the Mustang drove into the path of the minivan, colliding head-on.
Due to the crash, the van flipped over and immediately caught flames. A Good Samaritan who was passing by witnessed the crash and was able to pull the driver out of the burning vehicle. That Good Samaritan also stated that the Mustang driver was attempting to run away from the scene by foot.
CHP officers were able to detain the driver quickly at the scene, where he was evaluated and found to be driving under the influence. The minivan driver received major injuries but is expected to live. The driver of the Mustang will be facing DUI charges, bodily injuries, and felony hit-and-run. No other details are available.
An investigation is ongoing.
