On early Monday morning, a traffic accident near ABIA caused HAZMAT spill and left one person in hospital.
Austin-Travis County EMS and Fire emergency crews actively responded to the area at South FM 973 and State Hwy 71 Service Road — under the overpass at about 4:26 a.m. after getting reports of a crash involving two semi-trucks with the driver of the fuel truck trapped inside.
At about 5:07 a.m., emergency responders had freed the driver and were taking the victim to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center with non-critical injuries. The intersection was closed down due to a HAZMAT spill. Fire crews initially said that they would stay at the scene while the fuel is offloaded. They estimated that the road would be cleared and opened again to traffic at about 8:30 a.m.
The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport advised the passengers who were going to the airport this morning to be aware of the ongoing situation that was affecting traffic near the terminal and to find an alternate route. The scene was eventually cleared at around 9:40 a.m. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear.
An investigation is ongoing.
