On Sunday night, one person died following a multi-vehicle wreck on M-59 in Sterling Heights.
As per the initial information, the fatal five-vehicle pile-up took place at 10:05 p.m. on M-59, west of Mound Road. The preliminary investigation showed that 50-year-old Hamtramck resident was driving a silver Acura east in the westbound lanes of M-59 and collided head-on with a black Chevrolet Colorado. The Acura and Colorado were both hit again in a chain reaction that involved three other vehicles. The driver of the Acura was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later declared dead.
A 24-year-old Holly resident from one of the other vehicles was transported to a hospital in serious condition. The drivers of the other vehicles stayed at the scene and cooperated with the officials. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident. Westbound M-59 was shut down from Van Dyke Avenue to Dequindre Road for approximately five hours as crews worked at the scene. No other information was provided.
The incident remains under investigation.
