1 person dead after a crash in South Whittier; 34-year-old Darrell Jewett arrested for DUI (South Whittier, CA)

On Friday, one person was killed following a two-vehicle crash in South Whittier while authorities arrested 34-year-old Darrell Jewett on suspicion of driving under the influence.

As per the initial information, the fiery accident took place at Lambert and Colima roads, which is in an unincorporated county area. The early reports indicated that a suspect was driving east on Lambert Road in a Nissan Altima just after 5:30 a.m. while the Accord was heading south on Colima Road. Just then, both cars crashed into each other at the intersection. The CHP has not yet confirmed which car drove through a traffic light.

After the collision, the two cars hit Scotty’s Flower & Gifts on Colima Road. The reports also revealed that the Accord had caught fire due to the crash. The driver was pinned inside, and was unable to escape. The suspect ran away from the crash scene. A parking enforcement officer from the Whittier police department saw the crash and broadcasted it via his police radio. Police and deputies rushed to the scene. A Whittier officer later located the suspect, arrested him and handed him over to the CHP.

Darrell Jewett, 34, of Los Angeles was detained on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI and fleeing the scene of an accident. Jewett suffered moderate injuries from the crash and was transported to a local hospital. He will be booked at a county jail once he is discharged from the hospital. No other details are available.
