The California Highway Patrol is investigating a single-vehicle crash on Union Avenue around 6 a.m.
A preliminary investigation into the crash reveals the driver was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed. For reasons unknown , the vehicle veered off the road, side-swiped a power pole, and crashed into a tree.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. CHP said he was not wearing a seatbelt during the crash.
The male passenger in his car suffered injuries and was taken to Kern Medical.
According to the CHP, two lanes of Union have been blocked. Area drivers are asked to avoid the route.
Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
